In recent decades, global agriculture has undergone a radical transformation due to the introduction of new technologies and increased participation. Agriculture is the second largest source of employment in the world, after the service sector. Global value-added from agriculture, forestry and fishing increased by 68 per cent in real terms, between 2000 and 2020. It reached USD 4.7 trillion by 2020. Asia is now a major player. Asia contributed the most to global agriculture, with a 77 percent increase from USD 1.2 billion in 2000 to USD 2,9 trillion in 2020. China, India and the United States of America had the highest value-added agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors. The global food production will increase to meet the growing world population. Food supplies will need to rise by 60% to meet the growing world population, which is expected to reach ten billion people by 2050.
Recent years have seen a rapid change in the climate of our planet. Extremes in temperature, rain and weather are all part of the climate change. Global food security faces a big challenge as a result. This annual session, named after Prof. MS Swaminathan who was a pioneer in saving India from starvation in the late 1960s through the Green Revolution, will bring together global experts to discuss the challenges of climate change and food safety. They will also draw up a roadmap to assist governments, particularly in developing and less developed countries, to develop policies and programs that can deal with this challenge.
