Vancouver (/vaen’ku:v@r/ i Van-KOO-v@r, Canadian [vakuvaeR]), is a large city located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The 2021 Canadian Census recorded 662.248 residents in the city. This is up from the 631.486 people who lived there in 2016. Metro Vancouver had a population in 2021 of 2.6 millions, making it Canada's third largest metropolitan area. Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley make up the Lower Mainland, which has a population of more than 3 million. Vancouver is the most densely populated city in Canada with more than 5,700 people per square kilometer (15,00/sq mi)[6], and it's the fourth-highest in North America after New York City and San Francisco.
Vancouver is the most ethnically and culturally diverse city in Canada. 49.3 percent do not speak native English, while 47.8 are neither native French nor English speakers. 54.5 percent belong to visible minorities. It is consistently ranked as one of the world's most livable cities. Vancouver is one of the most affordable cities in Canada, and the world. Vancouver was first settled by indigenous peoples more than 10,000 ago, including the Squamish (Burrard), Musqueam (Squamish), and Tsleil Waututh(Burrard). Gastown was the original name of the city. It was founded around a makeshift bar on the western edge of Hastings Mill, built in 1867 by Gassy Jack. Gastown's steam clock marks the site. Gastown was then officially registered as a townsite called Granville, Burrard Inlet. In 1886, the Canadian Pacific Railway signed a contract to rename Vancouver. By 1887, the Canadian Pacific transcontinental railroad was extended into the city. The large natural port on the Pacific Ocean was a key link in trade between Asia-Pacific and Europe. [13][14].
