Jazzfest Berlin has been around for 60 years and is still going strong. Six decades of Jazzfest Berlin is six decades of German, European, Transatlantic, and Intercontinental History, as well as contemporary history.
The Jazzfest Research Lab, which will be launched in January 2023 by researchers from Germany and Australia, as well as students at the Berlin University of the Arts, and the University of Hildesheim, will take a close look at the 60-year archive of Jazzfest Berlin, its creators, musicians, and last but not the least, its myths. The history of Jazzfest Berlin is being analysed in various ways, such as gender and race, its evolution as a result of social-political changes, as well as the visual vocabulary of the festival. In two open discussion spaces, researchers will discuss their findings with other interested parties, including Jazzfest Berlin participants, as part of the festival program for this year. Their research was also the inspiration for the anniversary magazine commemorating 60 years of Jazzfest Berlin. The Haus der Berliner Festspiele hosts a poster and photo exhibition, a film program with concert recordings of the first 30 years of the festival, and discussions with current witnesses to provide broader insight into the 60 year history of the Festival.
