CIT Program - NAMI New Hampshire

Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Program Overview.

Advice for visitors: If someone is in immediate danger, call emergency services right away. If the situation is not urgent, read this to learn how the CIT program helps people in crisis and how first responders are trained to keep everyone safe.

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program trains police, fire, and EMS workers to help people who are having a mental health or substance use crisis. The training is about 40 hours and focuses on treating people with respect and dignity. It teaches first responders how to spot signs of mental illness, how to calm a tense situation, and where to send people for help in the community. CIT also helps build better teamwork between emergency services and mental health groups so that people get the right care faster. The goal is to protect the person in crisis, the public, and the responders.

The training covers many important topics in simple and clear ways. People learn basic and advanced verbal techniques to calm someone down, steps for dealing with a crisis that is getting worse, and how to talk with someone who may be thinking about suicide. The course also talks about rights and laws, how mental health and drug courts work, and special issues for children, teens, older adults, and people with memory disorders like dementia. Other lessons include substance use and co-occurring disorders, post-traumatic stress (PTS) and veterans’ needs, cultural differences, and how to help people who are homeless. The training explains psychopharmacology in a basic way and teaches self-care so responders can stay healthy and do their jobs well.

There are extra options like Mental Health First Aid for fire, EMS, and public safety staff. These shorter trainings teach how to spot signs of a problem early and how to give first help until a person can get professional care. The program also offers resources such as handouts, a resource booklet, and recorded webinars to learn more. Taking CIT or Mental Health First Aid can make a big difference in your community. It helps responders act with calm, safety, and care, and it helps people in crisis get the help they need. If you want to learn more about training dates, topics, or how to join, look for local program contacts or mental health organizations that run CIT trainings.
