Helsinki Baltic Herring Market 2026
The Helsinki Baltic Herring Market (Stadin Silakkamarkkinat) returns to Helsinki Market Square (Kauppatori) from 4 to 10 October 2026. Held since 1743, it is one of Finland’s oldest public events and a traditional autumn gathering for herring, archipelago products, and maritime culture.

Venue
The market occupies a central waterfront site at Kauppatori. Fishing boats remain in the Kolera-allas. For 2026 the event adds a restaurant and licensed area on Keisarinluoto pier, previously used for logistics, with wooden sales huts replacing older tents.
Arrival by public transport, walking, or cycling is recommended. The site is not fully accessible: some walkways are uneven or sloping, and access to boats involves stairs.
What to expect
The programme keeps traditional fishers at the centre while widening the offer to more archipelago foods and on-site restaurant dishes. The market supports sustainable herring fishing and small producers. Recent editions have drawn on the order of 90,000 visitors to the square.
