The division is a platform for a focused technical discussion on thermal hydraulics in the nuclear industry. This will include heat transfers and fluid mechanics in relation to the use of nuclear energy. The goal is to attract high-quality theoretical and experimental research to ANS. This includes basic phenomena as well as applications to nuclear system design.

Nuclear News: Proof of concept: the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment.
Alvin Weinberg, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's longest-serving director, had been experimenting with molten sal reactors for about 13 years by the time the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission approved plans to build the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment at the laboratory in late 1960. The MSRE was operational from 1965 to 1968, proving molten-salt reactors were reliable and could be operated with other alternatives than uranium 235.
