The ABC Kite Fest is Austin’s free, family-friendly spring kite festival at Zilker Park. The next edition is Saturday, April 10, 2027, 10:00–17:00. Admission is free.

Since 1929 — founded by the Exchange Club of Austin as a kite contest to keep children active — it has grown into the longest-running festival of its kind in the nation. It moved from Lamar Park (near today’s Congress Ave & E Cesar Chavez St) to Zilker Park in 1936, becoming the park’s first festival. Today it is supported by ABC Home and Commercial Services and the Friends of the ABC Kite Fest nonprofit (Friends of the ABC Zilker Park Kite Festival Inc., c/o ABC Home & Commercial Services, 9475 U.S. 290, Austin, TX 78724).

What to expect

Zilker Park fills with kite flying, a kite contest (homemade and store-bought kites; open to all ages), live music at MossFest Children’s Concert, Kids Club, Pet Zone, Mini Market local vendors, and food trucks. The organizers cite 98 years of tradition, 10,000+ kites, and 40+ activities and vendors.

Visitor information

  • Hours: 10:00–17:00
  • Admission: free (kite contest, children’s concert, Kids Club, and Pet Zone are free). Bring cash for food trucks and Mini Market vendors.
  • Pets: well-behaved, leashed pets welcome; clean up after them.
  • What to bring: kites, kids, leashed pets, snacks and drinks. Leave alcohol, cigarettes, grills, tents, and pop-up canopies at home.
  • Getting there: pre-paid parking and shuttle bus passes (purchase in advance). No parking in surrounding neighborhoods. Alternatives: Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, CapMetro MetroRapid 803 and MetroBus 3 (Barton Springs Station on South Lamar Boulevard), rideshare, walk/bike/scooter. ADA parking is free with a valid placard. Shuttle loop (when offered) 09:45–17:00 from Burger Activity Center, 3200 Jones Rd, Austin, TX 78745.
  • Weather: organizers work with the City of Austin. If the park is unsafe or unusable, the festival may be delayed, postponed, or cancelled; VIP, parking, and shuttle passes are refunded if cancelled.
  • VIP: High Flyer Club (early access, catered refreshments, shaded seating, air-conditioned restrooms, VIP parking) must be purchased in advance; children 8 and under free with a ticketed adult. VIP is non-refundable unless the City cancels the festival.
