Implementation of Reliability Methods in Open-Source Software
This chapter explores the transition from deterministic to probabilistic approaches in structural design, focusing on the implementation of structural reliability methods within a newly developed open-source software library.
Core Methodologies and Software
- Probabilistic Methods: The library integrates key reliability analysis techniques, including First-Order Reliability Method (FORM), Second-Order Reliability Method (SORM), and Monte Carlo Simulations.
- R Package Development: Developed as an R package in the open-source programming software R, the tool facilitates systematic parameter studies and serves as an open platform for scientific collaboration.
Practical Application
The software's performance is demonstrated through a parametric study on a practical example involving a bending problem in steel-reinforced concrete members. This example highlights the library's capability to handle nonlinear limit state functions and non-normally distributed variables effectively.
Future Work
- Guideline Development: Large parameter studies will support the creation of new guidelines for reliability in civil engineering, including code calibration and determining new partial safety factors (e.g., for non-metallic reinforced concrete and fixing anchors).
- Advanced Algorithms: Future implementations will include advanced reliability methods such as Monte Carlo with Subset Sampling.
